Never Played Before? Joining the Fall Basketball League in Regina

Never played before? Here's how a beginner fits into Regina's HoopLife League, what a first day looks like, and what it costs.

Two HoopLife coaches working with a group of young players in the Regina gym
The short version
  • No tryout: coaches build league teams on the floor once everyone has played, grouped by age and ability
  • Every league day starts with 30 minutes of coached training before games, built for first-timers
  • The season costs $450 per player for 10 weeks in Regina, with payment plans on request
  • 3x3 divisions cap at 6 players per team and 5v5 at 10 per team, and those caps hold
  • Weekly skills sessions are a lower-commitment first step for families not ready for a full season

Yes, a beginner can join the HoopLife League in Regina with no experience at all. Players are grouped by age and ability, not by how much basketball they have already played, and every league day opens with 30 minutes of coached training before anyone plays a game. A first-timer is not thrown onto a court with kids who have played for years.

This question comes up constantly this time of year: a parent has a 7 or 8 year old who has never played, and they are not sure if a league is the right first step or if it will be too much, too fast. It is a fair worry. Leagues sound competitive. Here is what actually happens.

Will my beginner be out of their depth on day one?

No. Every division in the HoopLife League starts with a coached training block before any game is played, run by the division head coach with team coaches on the floor beside them. That is where a beginner learns the basics: how to move, how to handle the ball, what to do when they do not have it. The teams are not set until the coaches have watched everyone play, so a brand new kid is not dropped onto a stacked roster. Grades 1 to 4 play 3x3 on hoops set to their height, which means a small kid is touching the ball constantly instead of standing in a corner. That is exactly the kind of game a first-timer needs: fewer bodies, more touches, and a coach who can actually see what they are doing.

There is no tryout and nothing extra to attend beforehand. The coaches sort teams out during the program itself, on the floor, as they see how everyone plays. Once that settles, that is your child's team and coach for the season.

What if my kid needs something gentler to start?

If a full 10-week league season still feels like a big first step, HoopLife's weekly skills sessions are a lower-commitment way in. One hour a week, split into beginner and advanced groups, with no season-long commitment attached. Some families use a few weeks of that first and move into the league once their kid has a feel for the game. Others go straight into the league because the coached training block at the start of every league day already teaches the fundamentals. Both are real starting points. Neither one requires a kid to already know how to play.

For more on how that decision plays out for different kids, HoopLife has written about it directly in League or Training First? How to Choose for Your Child.

What does a first league day actually cost and involve?

The HoopLife League in Regina costs $450 per player for a 10-week season, with payment plans available on request. That covers the coached training, the games and the weekly Confidence, Leadership and Basketball IQ workshop. There is nothing else to pay for. Game jerseys are provided at the building on league days, so there is no jersey to buy or remember, just indoor shoes, athletic clothing, a water bottle and a basketball if your child has one. If they do not, HoopLife has extras on hand.

A league day is one day a week: 30 minutes of coached training for the whole division, then the team splits off and plays two games. Parents watch from the viewing lounge every week. It is a full training day, not a drop-in game, so a beginner gets far more touches on the ball than they would in a typical practice.

Does the league sell out, and should I register now?

Yes, and plainly: HoopLife's fall league divisions in Regina do sell out. Teams are capped at 6 players for 3x3 divisions and 10 players for 5v5 divisions, and those caps hold. There is no squeezing in an extra team once a division is full. Spots are limited and they go, so if a beginner wants a spot and a good pick of days, the sooner a family registers the better.

If cost is the barrier rather than readiness, HoopLife works with families through BOOST Kids, and payment plans can be arranged on request.

FAQs parents ask about a first season

Straight answers, the kind that should hold up on their own.

  • My 7 year old has never played basketball. Can she still register for the HoopLife League? Yes. Players are grouped by age and ability, not experience, and every league day opens with 30 minutes of coached training before any games are played.
  • Is there a tryout my child has to pass first? No. There is no tryout and nothing extra to attend. Coaches build teams during the program itself, on the floor, once they have seen everyone play.
  • How much does the HoopLife League cost in Regina? The season is $450 per player for 10 weeks, and that covers the training, the games and the weekly workshop. Payment plans are available on request.
  • Do league divisions actually fill up? Yes, they do, and it is a real cap, not a soft one. 3x3 divisions are capped at 6 players per team and 5v5 at 10 per team, and once a division is full it stays full.

Frequently asked questions

My child has never played basketball. Can they still register for the HoopLife League in Regina?

Yes. Players are grouped by age and ability rather than experience, and every league day opens with 30 minutes of coached training before any games are played, so a first-timer is taught from week one instead of left to figure it out.

Is there a tryout or evaluation before my child can join?

No. There is nothing extra to attend beforehand. Coaches sort teams out on the floor during the program itself, once they have watched everyone play, and that becomes your child's team and coach for the season.

What does the HoopLife League cost, and are there payment options?

The HoopLife League in Regina costs $450 per player for a 10-week season, covering training, games and the weekly workshop, with payment plans available on request and funding help through BOOST Kids for families who need it.

Do the fall league divisions in Regina actually sell out?

Yes, they do. 3x3 divisions are capped at 6 players per team and 5v5 divisions at 10 players per team, and those caps hold, so spots are limited and it is worth registering early.

The coaches are outstanding. They are knowledgeable, patient, and truly care about each child's development. They take the time to break down skills, encourage effort, and build confidence in every player... The training sessions are well organized and very effective... You can really see the improvement in skills, teamwork, and overall understanding of the game after just a few sessions... We are extremely happy with our experience and would highly recommend HoopLife Basketball Training to any family looking for a high-quality program where kids can learn, grow, and truly enjoy the game.

We signed up our 8-year-old son for the 3-month membership and have really enjoyed our experience. Logistically, I like that all the sessions are laid out in advance, so you can choose what works best for your schedule. It was a great experience for our son to have different coaches and play with different kids regularly. He really enjoyed the coaches! They were friendly, knowledgeable and really helped him to improve his skills. The facility itself is fantastic, and we're glad we gave this a shot!

…Our son, Keith, not just loves the sport, but he also loves the coaches. We feel very welcome and “at home”, there. They're very friendly to everyone. Also, the skills that they're teaching our son are very helpful for his development. Our son hopes to get accepted in a basketball club while training with HoopLife.
