Is It Too Late to Sign Up for Basketball This Fall in Regina?

A straight answer for Regina parents asking if fall basketball registration is still open, what it includes and how to join now.

The short version
  • Weekly basketball training sessions in Regina run year-round with no term to miss, so a new player can start this week.
  • The HoopLife League's Fall season started the week of September 21; the Winter League opens for registration October 1.
  • Weekly sessions are capped at 8 players, Girls Only sessions at 16, and league teams at 6 (3x3) or 10 (5v5) players, and these caps are real.
  • The $10 Get Started package is a 60-minute first session for ages 7 to 17 at the HoopLife Centre in Regina.
  • Open gym runs most days, $10 to drop in or free with any HoopLife membership, with no booking commitment required.

No, it is not too late. HoopLife in Regina runs weekly skills sessions and open gym every week of the year, with no term to miss and no cut-off to beat, and a new player can start the very next session on the schedule. The HoopLife League's Fall season is already underway, but weekly training, Girls Only sessions and 3x3 keep running the whole time, so a late starter still has a real way in this week.

This is one of the most common questions that comes through the HoopLife front desk this time of year. A parent calls or texts wanting to know if their son or daughter missed the window, what the program actually includes, and whether it is worth joining partway through. Here is the honest answer, broken down by what is actually running right now.

Can my child still join something this week?

Yes. Weekly basketball training sessions in Regina run every week of the year for ages 7 to 17, split into Beginner and Advanced groups, capped at 8 players a session. These are not tied to a school-style term, so a child can start this week, next week, or any week after that. The session schedule shows the live calendar, including sessions for Ages 7-10, 11-13 and 14-17 running most days.

If the question is really about the HoopLife League specifically, that is a different answer. The Fall season of the HoopLife League started the week of September 21, and divisions are grouped by grade and filled during the season itself. League seasons run in blocks of ten weeks, three times a year: Fall, Winter and Spring. If a family is asking in late October or November whether they can still get into the Fall League, the honest move is to call or text (306) 993-4570 and ask about the specific division, because spots are limited and divisions do fill. The next clean entry point for league play is the Winter League, which opens for registration October 1.

What does a HoopLife program actually include?

This is the other half of the question parents ask right after "is it too late": what am I actually signing up for? For weekly skills sessions, it is one hour a week of coached training, year-round, with the group split by ability so nobody is in over their head and nobody is bored waiting their turn. For the HoopLife League, it is ten weeks of training and real games: every league day opens with 30 minutes of coached training for the whole division, then the division plays two games, all at the HoopLife Centre, 661 Solomon Cres. There is no tryout, and players are grouped by age and ability once the coaches see everyone on the floor.

For a child who has never played before, weekly training is usually the easier door to walk through right now, since it does not depend on a season's start date. A full rundown of what a brand new player should expect is in Never Played Before? Beginner Basketball in Regina, Start to Finish, which walks through the first hour and the first month.

What does it cost, and is there a cheaper way to start?

If a family wants to try one session before committing to anything ongoing, the $10 Get Started package is built exactly for that: a 60-minute session for ages 7 to 17, with a quick meet and greet coached by the HoopLife Director, plus two digital books. It asks the child's age first and books the right session automatically.

Beyond that single session, ongoing training runs through HoopLife's memberships, starting at $450 a quarter for the Rookie Membership, which loads 12 session credits up front, about one session a week for three months. Families with more than one kid, or who want to spread sessions across a Family Pack instead, can share credits instead of locking one child into a weekly slot. The memberships page lays out every tier with its price in plain numbers.

Does fall basketball in Regina sell out?

Yes, and the honest answer is to not wait around once a spot is in reach. Weekly skills sessions are capped at 8 players per session, Girls Only sessions are capped at 16, and league divisions are capped by team size, 6 players a team for 3x3 and 10 for 5v5. These numbers are real caps, not soft guidelines, so a division or session that looks full is full. If a family is asking whether basketball in Regina fills up this time of year, it does, and the better move is to call or register as soon as a spot looks right rather than wait for things to settle down.

What if my child needs more flexibility than a weekly slot?

Open gym is the easiest fallback for a family still deciding. It runs most days at the HoopLife Centre, costs $10 to drop in or is included free with any membership, and does not require booking a recurring slot. It is also a good way for a child to get extra reps between formal sessions once they do join something structured.

For a family weighing a weekly program against jumping straight into league play, League or Training First? How to Choose for Your Child walks through how to decide, which is often the real question underneath "is it too late," since plenty of kids are better served starting with training now and joining a league once the next season opens.

Whatever the entry point, the fastest way to get a real answer for a specific child, specific grade, specific week, is to call or text (306) 993-4570. HoopLife staff can check exactly what has room right now and get a child started without waiting for anything to reopen.

The coaches are outstanding. They are knowledgeable, patient, and truly care about each child's development. They take the time to break down skills, encourage effort, and build confidence in every player... The training sessions are well organized and very effective... You can really see the improvement in skills, teamwork, and overall understanding of the game after just a few sessions... We are extremely happy with our experience and would highly recommend HoopLife Basketball Training to any family looking for a high-quality program where kids can learn, grow, and truly enjoy the game.

We signed up our 8-year-old son for the 3-month membership and have really enjoyed our experience. Logistically, I like that all the sessions are laid out in advance, so you can choose what works best for your schedule. It was a great experience for our son to have different coaches and play with different kids regularly. He really enjoyed the coaches! They were friendly, knowledgeable and really helped him to improve his skills. The facility itself is fantastic, and we're glad we gave this a shot!

…Our son, Keith, not just loves the sport, but he also loves the coaches. We feel very welcome and “at home”, there. They're very friendly to everyone. Also, the skills that they're teaching our son are very helpful for his development. Our son hopes to get accepted in a basketball club while training with HoopLife.
