Get Paid to Coach Basketball Across the Country

A weekend in a community you have never been to, a gym full of kids who waited months for you to show up, and HoopLife covering the flight.

A large group of kids and HoopLife coaches together at a travel clinic gym
The short version
  • $20 to $35 an hour plus bonuses, with flights, hotels and living expenses covered by HoopLife.
  • Roughly 6 to 12 hours of coaching per weekend, for ages 7 to 17, beginner through elite.
  • You set the pace: one clinic occasionally, or most weekends of the year.
  • Must be a Canadian or American citizen. You can be based anywhere in either country.

A large part of what HoopLife does happens nowhere near Regina. We run basketball clinics in communities across Canada and the United States, many of them First Nations communities, a lot of them places where a proper basketball clinic has never come through before.

Somebody has to fly out and run those. That is this job.

What a clinic weekend looks like

You travel out, usually Friday. You run 6 to 12 hours of coaching across the weekend for kids aged 7 to 17, everything from children who have never held a ball properly to the best player in the region. You set up the gym, you run the sessions, you tear it down, and you travel home.

The gyms vary enormously. Some are beautiful. Some have a dead spot in the floor and a rim that is slightly off. You adapt, and the kids do not care, because you showed up.

The money

$20 to $35 an hour plus bonuses, and HoopLife covers travel, flights and living expenses. You are not fronting airfare and waiting on an expense claim.

The hours are flexible, from around 10 a week up to 40-plus. Some of our travel coaches do one clinic every couple of months around a full-time job. Some are out most weekends.

Who this suits

Honestly? People with either a lot of flexibility or a lot of stamina. University students between terms. Teachers. People between things. Coaches who want to see the country and cannot afford to see it any other way.

You need to be a Canadian or American citizen, because you will cross the border. You need to be in the kind of shape where you can be on a gym floor for six hours and still be good company at hour six.

The part that gets people

Coaches come back from these differently than they leave. You spend a weekend somewhere you would never otherwise go, with kids who will remember your name for years, and then you fly home. It is the part of this business people talk about at Christmas dinner.

It is also genuinely hard work. Early flights, long days, late nights, unfamiliar gyms, and you are the whole show. Both things are true.

How to apply

The Travel Basketball Coach posting has the full role and the application form. If you also live in Regina, plenty of our coaches do weekly sessions here and take clinics when they come up, which is a good way to build a full week.

Frequently asked questions

Does HoopLife pay for the flights?

Yes. Travel, flights and living expenses are covered by HoopLife. You are not paying up front and claiming it back.

How often would I travel?

You set the pace. The role runs from about 10 hours a week up to 40-plus, so it works as one clinic occasionally or as most weekends.

Do I need to live in Regina for this role?

No. You can be based anywhere in Canada or the United States. You must be a citizen of one of the two, because the work crosses the border.

What ages and levels would I be coaching?

Ages 7 to 17, and everything from complete beginners to elite players, often in the same weekend. You are given a curriculum, not left to improvise.

The coaches are outstanding. They are knowledgeable, patient, and truly care about each child's development. They take the time to break down skills, encourage effort, and build confidence in every player... The training sessions are well organized and very effective... You can really see the improvement in skills, teamwork, and overall understanding of the game after just a few sessions... We are extremely happy with our experience and would highly recommend HoopLife Basketball Training to any family looking for a high-quality program where kids can learn, grow, and truly enjoy the game.

We signed up our 8-year-old son for the 3-month membership and have really enjoyed our experience. Logistically, I like that all the sessions are laid out in advance, so you can choose what works best for your schedule. It was a great experience for our son to have different coaches and play with different kids regularly. He really enjoyed the coaches! They were friendly, knowledgeable and really helped him to improve his skills. The facility itself is fantastic, and we're glad we gave this a shot!

…Our son, Keith, not just loves the sport, but he also loves the coaches. We feel very welcome and “at home”, there. They're very friendly to everyone. Also, the skills that they're teaching our son are very helpful for his development. Our son hopes to get accepted in a basketball club while training with HoopLife.
