Girls Basketball in Regina: Why a Gym of Her Own Changes Everything
Girls leave sport in their teens at far higher rates than boys. A room built for them is one of the few things that reliably changes it.

- Girls Only sessions run every week of the year for girls ages 7-13, eight players a session.
- They are coached by women who have played this game at a high level.
- The HoopLife League runs girls divisions from grades 1 to 8, 3x3 through grade 4 and 5v5 from grade 5.
- Complete beginners are the point, not the exception.
Ask a twelve-year-old girl why she stopped playing and you will rarely hear "I did not like basketball". You will hear that she never got the ball, that the boys took over, that she did not want to look bad in front of them, or that she was the only girl left.
That is a solvable problem, and the solution is not complicated. It is a gym where she is not the only one.
What Girls Only sessions actually are
Girls Only sessions run every week of the year at the HoopLife Centre, for girls ages 7-13 in two bands: 7-10 and 11-13. Eight players a session. All levels, including girls who have never touched a basketball.
The hour is real work, not a softened version of the sport: shooting, handling, finishing, game IQ, and then straight into live play. What changes is the room. Every player in it is a girl, and the coaches are women who have played this game at a high level, including coaches who know the University of Regina Cougars experience firsthand.
That last part matters more than parents expect. A ten-year-old girl seeing a woman demonstrate a move, correct her footwork and run the room is a quiet, constant argument that this game belongs to her too.
Why the numbers say this matters
Girls leave sport at far higher rates than boys once they hit their teens. The reasons are consistent across every study that has looked at it: fewer opportunities, less confidence, less visible role models, and social discomfort in mixed rooms during exactly the years when self-consciousness peaks.
None of that is about ability. It is about environment. Fix the environment and a large share of the drop-off simply does not happen.
Girls in the HoopLife League
Sessions build the skills; a season is where a girl finds out she is a basketball player. The HoopLife League runs its own girls divisions:
- Girls 3x3, grades 1/2 and 3/4 — Saturday afternoons, teams of six.
- Girls 5v5, grades 5/6 and 7/8 — Saturday evenings, officiated full-court games with referees and scorekeepers.
Same season structure as every other division: ten weeks, 30 minutes of training every night, real games, and the Confidence, Leadership & Basketball IQ workshop. No tryout, nobody cut.
"She has never played. Will she be behind?"
No, and this is the single most common question we get about Girls Only. The sessions are built for mixed ability on purpose, and eight players to a coach means a beginner gets corrected constantly instead of being carried along by the group.
In practice, the girl who has never played is usually not the only one in the room, and she almost never stays the newest for long.
