Why We Run a Girls-Only Basketball Session
Some girls thrive in mixed sessions from day one. Plenty more try basketball only because a girls-only room exists. This is for the second group, and the parents deciding for them.

- Girls Only runs weekly for ages 7-13, in two bands: 7-10 and 11-13.
- Capped at 16 in the room, beginners and advanced together, coached by women.
- It is a doorway, not a separate league: the whole gym is open to every girl in it.
- Paid with the same session credits as every weekly session, so nothing extra to figure out.
Every mixed session we run has girls in it, some of them the best players in the room. Nothing about our gym is boys-by-default, and if your daughter is happy walking into any session, she does not need this page.
This page is for the other situation, which is common enough that we built a program for it: a girl who wants to try basketball and will not, because of who else will be in the gym when she does.
The problem the room solves
Ask parents of daughters and you hear the same story with small variations. She is interested. She practises in the driveway. And she will not come to a session, because at nine or twelve years old the fear of looking like a beginner in front of boys is genuinely stronger than the pull of the sport.
You can argue with that fear or you can remove it. We removed it: one hour a week where the whole gym is girls, the coaches are women who have played, and the question of who is watching is off the table entirely. What is left is basketball.
What the hour is
The same real coaching as any HoopLife session, not a softened version. Ball handling, shooting, finishing, defence, live play, run from the same written curriculum as the rest of the gym. Ages 7-13, in two bands: 7-10 and 11-13. The room is capped at 16, with beginners and advanced players in it together and the coaching split to match.
Having both levels in one room is deliberate. A brand-new nine-year-old watching a confident twelve-year-old run a drill is seeing her own next two years, and that does more for retention than any speech.
Coached by women, on purpose
Girls this age take the ceiling of a sport from who they see running it. A woman demonstrating the drill, correcting the footwork and holding the room is a quiet, weekly answer to the question every girl in a male-dominated sport eventually asks, which is whether this game is actually for her.
A doorway, not a fence
The point of Girls Only is not to keep girls in a separate lane. It is to get girls through the door who otherwise would not come, and then let them go wherever their game takes them. Girls from this session play 3x3, join mixed skills sessions, and play league seasons — girls play in grades 1 through 8 — and camp weeks are for everyone aged 7-17.
Plenty of girls simply stay in Girls Only for years too, because they like the room. Both outcomes are wins, and we genuinely do not have a preference.
The practical details
It is a weekly one-hour session paid with the same session credits as everything else, from a membership or the $750 Family Pack, so a family with a daughter in Girls Only and a son in skills sessions runs both from one purchase. The current times are on the live schedule.
Worth knowing the boundary honestly: Girls Only runs to age 13. From 14, girls train in the mixed sessions and league, usually with several years of confidence behind them by then, which is rather the point.
If your daughter is on the fence, the $10 Get Started package is the low-stakes way in: a planning meeting plus a first coached session, and we will point her at whichever room fits her best.
Frequently asked questions
What ages are Girls Only sessions for?
Ages 7 to 13, in two bands: 7-10 and 11-13. From age 14, girls train in the mixed sessions and the league.
Who coaches Girls Only?
Women who have played the game. That is deliberate: girls this age take the ceiling of a sport from who they see running it.
Is it beginner-friendly?
Yes. Beginners and advanced players share the room, capped at 16 total, with coaching split by level. A girl who has never played is expected, not an exception.
How is it paid for?
With the same session credits as every weekly session, from a membership or the Family Pack, so nothing separate to figure out.
Can girls play in the HoopLife League too?
Yes. Girls play in the league in grades 1 through 8, and camps are for everyone aged 7 to 17. Girls Only is a doorway into the gym, not a separate lane.
